What is Judo?

Jigoro Kano, The Founder of Kodokan Judo

Judo is a Japanese martial art and Olympic sport founded in 1882 by Jigoro Kano. The word Judo means “the gentle way,” reflecting its core principle of using balance, timing, and leverage rather than brute strength. Practitioners learn how to safely throw an opponent, control them on the ground, and apply pins or submissions with precision and control. Central to Judo is the concept of kuzushi (off-balancing), where technique and positioning allow a smaller person to effectively manage a larger one. Safety, discipline, and respect are fundamental parts of every class.

Beyond the physical techniques, Judo is a system of character development built on two guiding principles: maximum efficiency with minimum effort, and mutual welfare and benefit. Students learn perseverance, humility, self-control, and confidence through structured training and partner practice. Whether practiced recreationally, competitively, or for personal growth, Judo builds not only physical skill but also strong character — making it a lifelong discipline for children and adults alike.

Teaching Philosophy: Sequential Learning in Judo

At the core of Tim’s instruction is a method called Sequential Learning.

Rather than teaching techniques as isolated movements, Sequential Learning organizes Judo into clear, progressive layers:

  • Foundational movement and balance
  • Kuzushi (off-balancing principles)
  • Entry mechanics and positioning
  • Timing and controlled execution
  • Application through structured drilling and live training

Each student builds skill step-by-step, ensuring understanding before progression. This approach eliminates confusion, reduces injury risk, and builds confidence — especially for beginners.

For children, Sequential Learning creates structure and clarity.
For adults, it builds efficiency and technical depth.
For advanced students, it refines timing and precision.

The result is not just better technique — but long-term mastery.

Passion for Inclusive Training

Coach Tim and Donald.

Tim has a strong passion for working with children and adults with special needs. Judo offers:

  • Structure
  • Predictability
  • Physical regulation
  • Confidence-building repetition
  • Social development through safe partner interaction

Through patience, consistency, and individualized pacing, he creates an environment where every student — regardless of ability — can succeed.

His belief is simple:

Judo is for everyone.

Community First

Coach Tim and his son Nigel.

Sequence Judo was built with a clear mission:
To create a community-centered program focused solely on helping people.

While competition is respected as part of Judo’s tradition, the primary emphasis of the program is:

  • Character development
  • Discipline and respect
  • Physical confidence
  • Mental resilience
  • Service to others

Tim firmly believes Judo is a vehicle for personal growth.

The dojo culture reflects this belief. Students are taught to support one another, train safely, and uphold the values of mutual welfare and benefit.

However, if a student wishes to compete, we will fully support and encourage competition. Tim is a member and certified Regional Coach with USA Judo. In addtion, Tim is a member of the Judo Black Belt Association (JBBA), Amatuer Athletics Union (AAU), and the United States Judo Association (USJA).

A Program Built on Purpose

Sequence Judo is not designed to be flashy or commercial. It is designed to be intentional.

  • Technical precision
  • Structured progression
  • Respectful environment
  • Service-driven mission

For Tim, teaching Judo is not just instruction — it is mentorship.

After 25 years in the grappling arts, his focus is no longer personal achievement. It is building something that serves families, strengthens individuals, and benefits the community.
